Antiquorum Auctioneers SA said it filed a criminal complaint in a Geneva court against its former chief executive and co-founder, Osvaldo Patrizzi, alleging that he was involved in fraudulent activities at the high-profile watch-auction house.
In the complaint -- which Antiquorum said in a statement it had filed in October -- the auction house's board alleges that Mr. Patrizzi was involved in theft of valuable watches. The complaint also accuses Mr. Patrizzi of misappropriating company funds and false accounting, according to the statement, which was released late Tuesday.
Mark Schumacher, a business associate of Mr. Patrizzi's, confirmed that the complaint had been filed and said Mr. Patrizzi denied any wrongdoing. He characterized the announcement of Antiquorum's legal action as an attempt to smear Mr. Patrizzi just as he launched a new auction house Tuesday. Mr. Schumacher said Mr. Patrizzi had filed a countermotion against Antiquorum's October complaint.
Mr. Schumacher is chief operating officer of Mr. Patrizzi's new auction house, called Patrizzi & Co. Auctioneers. Reached by phone, Mr. Patrizzi declined to comment.
The legal proceedings are the latest salvo in a protracted battle between Mr. Patrizzi and the new management of Antiquorum. Under Mr. Patrizzi, Antiquorum pioneered the watch-auction market, helping boost the profile of brands such as Patek Philippe and Omega among collectors. Late last year, Antiquorum's biggest shareholder, Japanese media group Artist House Holdings, led a boardroom revolt that resulted in Mr. Patrizzi's departure.
Describing its complaint, Antiquorum said in its statement that Mr. Patrizzi "employed deception...to enrich himself personally, in some instances by millions of Swiss francs at the expense of parties invested in Antiquorum."
Lionel Halperin, a lawyer representing Antiquorum, said the complaint reflected the findings of an independent audit conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP. A spokeswoman for PWC declined to comment.
